Celebrate Trainsgiving With Us
Today is Giving Tuesday, or as we like to call it, Trainsgiving. It is touted as a “global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.”
On this special day, we want to recognize the power trains have to change the world, specifically as a tool to improve our communities—big and small. And thanks to major new funding from Congress, we’ve never had a better chance to make good on the promise of passenger rail.
Here are three ways that trains strengthen our communities:
1. They create smart and sustainable growth. High-speed trains promote density by transforming land-development patterns. Historically the focus on roads has generated sprawl and hollowed out our city centers. Trains can break us out of this pattern and create healthy, walkable and thriving city centers.
2. They multiply opportunities in small and mid-sized communities. Long drives are a normal part of daily life in rural areas. Trains make life better by making many of these trips easier and more affordable. They can connect workers to jobs, bring families together, and establish links to markets and customers for businesses of all size.
3. They improve local transit options. High-speed trains boost and build on existing bus and rail systems. Travelers use local transit to reach high-speed trains, for starters. And when they are well-coordinated and easily accessible, ridership increases on both high-speed rail and local transit systems. That builds political will and funding for the entire transportation network.
As you can see, high-speed trains will build stronger and more resilient communities throughout the country, and you can play a role in making this happen. Our members have already helped us secure record funding for high-speed, intercity and urban passenger rail. Now we need to make sure this funding goes to the right projects and that we continue to secure this level of investment year after year.
