Chicago Tribune calls for national grade crossing protection program.
Earlier this week, The Chicago Tribune’s Editorial Board called for an expedited program to install flashers and gates at every highway/railroad crossing hosting passenger trains.
We totally agree.
The model should be the Chicago – St. Louis corridor where the Union Pacific and the State of Illinois partnered to install gates at every crossing, public and private, on the Union Pacific portion of the route.
Congress took a step in the right direction with the Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program, but the $573 million available for the program this year is a drop in the bucket.
This is a highway issue, as well as a railroad issue, the state’s should use highway money to get this critical safety problem solved asap.
