High Demand for Bullet Trains in Texas

November 14, 2016

Texans would welcome high-speed rail as a much-needed alternative to their current options. This was the sentiment in a recently released study assessing demand for Texas Central’s proposed high-speed line linking Dallas and Houston.

There are about 14 million trips made between Greater Houston and North Texas annually. Ninety percent are made by car with driving times ranging from 3.5 and 5.5 hour. A growing population will cause greater congestion making travel times worse. Flying isn’t much better.

Texans are ready to embrace high-speed rail. The proposed service is projected to save 90% of residents living in the area at least 1 hour of travel time.

The bullet train will connect two major economic hubs whose populations are expected to grow. The study projects ridership to reach 5 million by the mid 2020’s and 10 million journeys by 2050. The Texas bullet train is expected to account for almost 30% of the total travel market in 2050.

It is great to see that the public demand for high-speed rail in Texas is so high. Texas Central expects to begin construction by 2018.
