The High Speed Rail Alliance is leading the movement for high-speed rail networks across North America. We’re doing it city by city and state by state.
Across the country, elected officials, civic leaders, and engaged citizens are promoting train service for their communities. Collectively, they could build the political will for a truly national railway program.
We harness that local energy, connect advocates, and turn scattered enthusiasm into sustained federal and state investment.

Why the Alliance
We’re based in Chicago—the beating heart of the nation’s railroad network. From the center of a region that’s critical to any sustained federal program, our reach and influence extend in all directions. Our work in communities of all sizes—across all regions—adds up to a broad national impact.
Through the years, our efforts have resulted in expanded Amtrak service, a robust rebuild of the Chicago – St. Louis Corridor, the creation of the Illinois High Speed Railway Commission, and grassroots support for California High Speed Rail.
The Integrated Network Approach
We advocate for the Integrated Network Approach: new high-speed lines combined with improved shared-use lines and intercity buses to connect entire regions.
Our approach creates a virtuous cycle. More connections mean more ridership and more revenue as more people can take trains for more reasons. As more riders benefit from the federal and state investments to build great trains, we build a strong and sustainable political base.

About the High Speed Rail Alliance
We are a nonprofit supported by individuals, municipalities, companies, and foundations. Founded in 1993, we hired our first full-time staff in 2001. Over the past quarter-century, we’ve built strong relationships, a deep expertise, and a national and international presence.
We’re a staff of three full-time employees supported by members, volunteers, and outside contractors who handle communications, media outreach, and organizing—governed by a six-member, all-volunteer board.
Small team, national footprint. Every dollar of corporate support goes further here than it would at an organization ten times our size.
