“A Huge Milestone for California High-Speed Rail

Three key developments emerged from the California High Speed Rail Authority‘s extended board meeting this week.

First, the California HSR Authority’s board of directors green lighted the environmental impact statement for the Palmdale to Burbank segment.

The approval means all environmental documents for the 463-mile SF to LA line are now cleared.

Newsweek: Strong, Bipartisan Support for HSR

High-speed rail enjoys strong, bipartisan support in the US. A new poll by Newsweek finds that 60 percent of respondents favor the construction of more HSR lines; just 6 percent oppose it. There is little difference in support among people who backed Joe Biden in the 2020 election and people who backed Donald Trump—67 versus 59 percent, respectively.

House Budget Proposal Would Cut Rail Funding

On June 25, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (T-HUD) released its draft FY25 appropriations bill. This bill would significantly cut funding for Amtrak and critical grant programs for intercity rail and transit.
