Newsletter 9/13/24: A New Opportunity for High Speed Rail In Illinois

A New Opportunity for Chicago-St. Louis High Speed Rail

The Illinois High Speed Rail Commission has begun initial design work for a high-speed line linking St. Louis and Chicago.

The Alliance directly helped with the creation of the Illinois High-Speed Rail Commission in 2021, and our executive director serves as a commissioner.

Now, that work is paying off. Launching a public study of the options for high-speed trains linking Chicago and St. Louis creates an opportunity to build advocacy power that ensures the study goes well and that the line gets built.

If you want to be part of this work, please join the Alliance or make an additional donation today!

America’s First High Speed Rail Factory to Be Built In New York

This week it was announced that Brightline West’s high-speed trains will be manufactured at a new Siemens Mobility factory in Horseheads, New York. They will be the first high-speed trains built in America, with production expected to start in 2026.

Brightline West also unveiled new renderings of the high-speed trains. We were there when Brightline broke ground on the Las Vegas to Southern California high-speed rail line and are thrilled with the progress being made

Brightline’s plan is to launch service in time for the 2028 Olympics. This is a transformational project and it’s important we build on this momentum by pushing for high-speed rail in other parts of the country too.

This is your chance to meet an elected leader fighting for high-speed rail, and to learn how this proposal can connect communities while reducing emissions throughout the country.

The Need for a National Railway Program

When: Friday, October 25 at 12pm CT on Zoom

With America’s first two true high-speed rail projects underway in California and Nevada—and with Congress appropriating tens of billions of dollars in new railroad funding in recent years—this is an exciting moment for high-speed rail. But to sustain and build on the momentum, “we need to address the intercity rail market with a holistic vision for rail across the country.”
